Linking to ZugZugDB

There are no limitations on linking to ZugZugDB.

Link to any page, from anywhere, as often as you like: guild sites, forums, wikis, addons, spreadsheets. You do not need to ask. Every address below is permanent.

Every record has one address: /<kind>/<id>/<name>. The number is the game's own id and it alone decides the page. The name part is there for people to read: leave it off or get it wrong and you are redirected to the right one.

Short links are for chat and for places that count characters: zugzugdb.com/i/19019 goes to the item, /s/ to a spell, /n/ an NPC, /q/ a quest, /o/ an object, /z/ a zone. The "Link" box at the bottom of every record page holds that page's short link, ready to copy.

Lists live at /items, /spells, /npcs, /quests, /objects, /zones, /itemsets, /factions, /professions, /classes, /achievements.

If your fingers still type database addresses the way they did in 2005, they work here too. A question mark, a letter and a number on the front page go to the same place they always did:

To get our item and spell tooltips on your own pages, add this line once, anywhere in the page:

Every link on the page to /item/…, /spell/…, /i/… or /s/… on zugzugdb.com gets a tooltip. Your links are not changed: same address, same text, same click.

• The script is 8.2 KB (3.1 KB compressed) and loads nothing until somebody hovers, focuses or taps a link.
• No cookies, no tracking, no analytics. The only request it makes is for the tooltip of the link being looked at, sent without cookies and without a referrer.
• It draws inside its own sealed box, so your styles do not leak into the tooltip and ours do not leak into your page.
• To switch it off for a link, or for a whole section, put data-zz-tip="off" on the link or on anything around it.
• Keyboard focus shows the tooltip, Escape hides it. On a phone the first tap shows it and the second follows the link.

Feel free to load the script from our server, or copy it to yours, whichever you prefer. If you copy it, it still fetches tooltips from zugzugdb.com.

In your browser: this site describes its search to browsers (opensearch.xml). In Firefox, right-click the address bar here and choose "Add ZugZugDB". Chrome and Edge pick it up after your first search: type zugzugdb.com, press Tab, and search the database from the address bar.

Paste a record's address into Discord, Slack, a forum or a chat app and it unfolds into a card with the tooltip or the key facts on it. The cards are plain images, one per record, for example this one, and you may use them wherever you link to the page they belong to.
